L’ull no pot dir a la mà: «No em fas cap falta», ni tampoc el cap als peus: «No em feu cap falta.» Ben al contrari, els membres del cos que semblen més febles són els més necessaris; els que ens semblen menys dignes, els cobrim amb més honor; i els que tenim per menys decents, els tractem amb més decència, cosa que no necessiten els membres més decents. Déu ha disposat el cos de tal manera que ha donat més honor als membres que més en necessiten, perquè en el cos no hi hagi divisions, sinó que tots els membres tinguin la mateixa sol·licitud els uns pels altres. Per això, quan un membre sofreix, tots els altres sofreixen amb ell, i quan un membre és honorat, tots els altres s’alegren amb ell.
