But he answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man will not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan, for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “On the other hand it is written, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil, and after he had fasted forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry.

And he said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

From that time on, Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is near.”
