Prayers for the Adoption Journey

DAY 2 OF 7

Day 2: Heart of Peace

Think back to when you were in school, and you were asked a question you didn’t know the answer to. Did you have butterflies in your stomach, or did your heart start beating faster?

Adoptees and adoptive parents often have to walk through life carrying big questions they do not have the answers to. Questions like, “Why did my birth mom choose adoption? Who is my father? Why wasn’t I in your belly?”

To be honest, as an adoptive mom who has been asked these questions and seen my own son piece together his adoptive journey, it has often felt like anxiety was closer than peace. But isn’t that what the enemy would want?

I tried my best to answer my son's questions and regularly found that when the information he needed was not available, God’s truth always was. And God’s word brings peace.

When my son was younger and I didn’t have the information he needed, I would share what I could, and we would pray. It looked something like this:

"Son, your dad and I love you, and your birth mom chose adoption because she loved you. I know that is not easy to understand, but I hope someday you will. What is also true is that God loves you and is here for you. If you need something, let’s do what His word says in Philippians 4:6-7: let’s not be anxious, but pray and thank God for your birth mom and ask God for what you need or want to know."

Adoptive family, God brought you together and is with you on this journey. Turn to Him when you need Him, for anything and everything, and there you will find peace.

Prayers for the Parent

Heavenly Father,

I lift up this precious child to You. You know every question in their heart, every longing, and every place that feels unsettled. Lord, I ask that You quiet their spirit with Your perfect peace.

When worries or doubts rise up, replace them with calm assurance that they are safe, loved, and fully accepted in You. Help them find contentment—not in comparing themselves to others, but in knowing they are wonderfully made and have a special place in this world.

Teach their heart to rest in Your love. Let joy grow where sadness once lived, and let peace guard their thoughts and dreams. Remind them daily that they don’t need to strive to be enough, because in You, they already are.

Lord, fill this child’s heart with gratitude for the family and future You’ve given them. May they walk with confidence, calmness, and a steady trust in You all the days of their life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers for the Child

Dear God,

Please help my heart feel calm.
When I worry or feel sad, remind me You are near.
Thank You for loving me and giving me my family and thank you for my birth parents.
Help me to be thankful and content.
Fill me with Your peace every day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
