Prayers for the Adoption Journey

DAY 1 OF 7

A Note to Adoptive Parents

This reading plan was created with love to support and encourage your family on the adoption journey. We understand that every family’s story is unique, and each child processes their adoption in their own time and way.

This plan openly discusses topics such as adoption, grief, loss, and identity, assuming the child is aware of their adoption story. Because these subjects are sensitive, we lovingly encourage you to review the daily readings, reflections, and prayers first.

You know your child best. We trust you to decide whether to walk through this plan on your own first or to experience it together as a family. Our prayer is that this resource will be a source of hope, healing, and connection for you, wherever you are on your journey.

Day 1: Courage for the Journey

The adoption journey takes courage. It begins with the brave act of a birth mom choosing life and entrusting her child to another family—a profound act of love that is often misunderstood. It takes an adoptive family to say yes to making a covenant to love and care for a child just as their own – the way God made a covenant with us – sacrificing so much so to be part of His family. And let’s not forget so much paperwork!

Depending on the circumstances of their entry into the world, adoptees may experience anxiety, sadness, and grief as they process their adoption.

The truth is that everyone involved in the adoption journey – birth parents, adoptive parents, and adoptees – all were made by God, created in His image, and designed for wonderful things. Sometimes, embracing this truth requires prayer, patience, and daily reminders of God’s presence.

Take courage in knowing that God makes wonderful things. He made you, and you are wonderful. He created birth parents, adoptive parents, and everyone who is a part of your adoptive journey. Not only did He create you, but He also promises to be with you always.

God is your constant—your beginning and end. Walk your adoptive journey with courage, knowing that God made you and walks this road with you every step of the way. You can do brave things because God is with you – always!

Note: Each day we will provide a prayer for parents to pray for their child, and one for the child to pray as well. We encourage you to pray these out loud together.

Prayer for the Parents

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this precious child and the unique path You have set before them. Lord, I ask that You fill their heart with courage. When they feel afraid, anxious, or unsure, remind them that You are with them and that Your strength is made perfect in their weakness.

Help them to face challenges bravely, to speak truthfully, and to stand strong even when the world feels uncertain. Give them confidence in who You made them to be, and let them trust that they are chosen, loved, and never alone.

Surround them with encouragement, protection, and guidance. Teach them to rely on You first and to step forward boldly into the plans You have for their life. May courage become a part of who they are, shining through every step of their journey.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer for the Child

Dear God,

Thank You for loving me.
Please help me be brave when I feel afraid.
Give me courage to try new things and face hard moments.
Help me remember that You are always with me and I am never alone.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
