Freedom From Familiar: 5 Day Devotional

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Bold Decisions

Reflection:
There comes a point in every believer’s journey when staying where you are feels safer than stepping where God is calling you to go. It’s not that the familiar is fulfilling—it’s just predictable. The unknown, however, demands courage.

I remember standing at a crossroads in my own life; faced with an opportunity that terrified me. Everything in me wanted to stay where it was safe and familiar. At the time, I was living in North Carolina, surrounded by comfort and community. But deep down, I sensed that God was calling me to something new, something waiting for me in another state. The move didn’t make sense on paper. It meant leaving behind the familiar to step into the unknown.

Joshua stood in that same tension when God called him to lead Israel after Moses’ death. He wasn’t just stepping into new territory; he was stepping into a new identity. The only way forward was faith. So, God gave him a command that still echoes through every bold decision we face today: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

And just like Joshua, Esther faced her own defining moment. To remain silent would have been easier—but purpose demanded action. Her courage to approach the king risked her life, but it rescued her people. Her story reminds us that bold decisions are often uncomfortable because they carry kingdom impact.

Proverbs 3:5–6 invites us to trust in the Lord with all our heart—not some of it, not when it makes sense, but all of it. Bold decisions are rarely clear at first. But when we lean into trust rather than understanding, God straightens paths we didn’t even realize were crooked.

Sometimes faith looks like packing up and moving before you have all the answers. It looks like trusting that God’s hands are steady even when your knees are shaking. And looking back now, I can see that obedience opened doors I didn’t even know existed. The same courage that carried Joshua into the Promised Land and Esther into the king’s court is the courage that carries us into God’s promises today.

What bold decision is God calling you to make? Maybe it’s starting something new, walking away from something that no longer aligns with His purpose, or speaking up when silence feels easier. Whatever it is, courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the decision to move with fear, knowing God walks beside you. You don’t need to have it all figured out to take the next step—you just need to trust the One who does.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to trust You in the decisions I face. Give me the courage to follow Your will, even when it feels uncertain or uncomfortable. I know You are with me every step of the way. Amen.
