Freedom From Familiar: 5 Day Devotional

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: Facing Fear

Reflection:
When my daughter was younger, she was afraid to jump into the pool. She would stand at the edge for what felt like forever, peering into the water but unable to move. No matter how much I encouraged her, she wouldn’t jump until she could feel my hands wrapped around her waist. The water represented everything unfamiliar, too deep, too uncertain, too risky.

One day, I decided to teach her a deeper lesson about trust. I placed my hands around her waist like always, she took a deep breath, and jumped. But as she jumped, I gently released my hands for just a moment, then caught her as soon as she hit the water. In that split second, she realized something beautiful: the jump she feared the most was actually more fun than she imagined, and even when she couldn’t feel my hands, I was still there to catch her.

Fear often works the same way in our spiritual lives. It keeps us tethered to the familiar. It whispers that stepping out is too risky, too uncertain, or too overwhelming. But 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that the spirit of fear doesn’t come from God. The Spirit He’s given us is one of power, love, and self-discipline; the very qualities we need to face fear head-on.

Psalm 27:1 declares that “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” That truth reminds us that fear loses its strength when it’s exposed to God’s light. And Isaiah 41:10 echoes the same promise: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” You are never facing the unknown alone. God goes before you, stands beside you, and carries you when you can’t take another step.

Facing fear doesn’t mean it disappears; it means deciding to move forward even when your heart still trembles. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the presence of faith. Every time you choose to trust God instead of your fear, you step closer to the freedom He’s calling you into.

So, what fears have been holding you back from obedience? Is there something God has asked you to start or stop that you’ve delayed because of uncertainty? Remember, the same God who called you is the same God who will sustain you. If He’s asking you to leap, it’s only because He knows He’ll catch you.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my light, my strength, and my security. When fear tries to keep me from moving forward, remind me that You have not given me a spirit of fear. Fill me with power, love, and self-discipline. Help me to trust You enough to take the next step, knowing You will uphold me. Amen.
