Day 11: Conformed to his likeness – a shape to take
The Potter’s Plan
One of the most fascinating things to watch is a potter working with a piece of raw, formless clay. As he starts out, forming and reworking the clay, building it up and breaking it down, there isn’t much that is inspiring or attractive to the untrained or uninformed eye.
But the artist has something in mind. He knows what he is making, and he is patiently working at it until, finally, the vessel that he had planned, emerges, ready to be displayed or used.
The mind of God
The image of a potter working at his craft is one of the most common pictures that springs to mind when we think of God shaping us and moulding us. It is also one of the most prayed requests by believers who are earnestly submitting to God’s work in their lives: “Lord, shape me; I am clay in your hand.”
As necessary as it may be to constantly be willing to yield to God’s work in our lives, it is vitally important to understand in Christ we have already been made into a new creation (1 Corinthians 5:17 NIV); we aren’t half-morphed creatures without form or identity! We are recreated in Christ.
With this in mind – the certainty and finality of my position in Christ – Paul then writes in Romans 8:29 (NIV) that God, who knew and planned you before anything existed, had one shape in mind for your life – Christlikeness. And he performs this very delicate and loving work over time – it isn’t an instant, pop-it-in-the-microwave affair!
The preceding verse tells us this much – verse 28 says that God makes all things work together for our good. This speaks of process, of time and care and intentionality.
What are you currently facing? Does it feel like the Potter is busy with a masterpiece? Or do you feel very much ‘under construction’, wondering what will come of this? Know this, as his son or daughter, God is fully devoted to using your circumstances to finish the work that he started in you (Philippians 1:6), which will culminate in you conforming more to the image of Christ!
Prayer reflection
Lord, I thank you that I am a new creation in Christ. This emboldens me to surrender once again to your loving hand, increasingly shaping in me the image of Christ.
Amen.
