“Being Secure In Your Purpose” Secure; (adjective) Position of being fixed firmly and correctly and therefore not likely to move, fall or break. (Cambridge Dictionary) One of the best moments for me in the family film The Incredibles is where Helen and Bob are arguing about Bob’s clandestine superhero work. Pleading with him to focus on the needs of the family she turns to him and shouts, “This is not about YOU!” I want you to understand something about your life. It is not about YOU. Hear me out. This might sound a bit weird, but I don’t believe you were born for your benefit. You are not here to please yourself and you were not put on earth to make yourself happy. I once heard a talk by Bill Johnson of Bethel Church, Redding, in which he said something along these lines – and this is not a direct quote – “Be prepared that God may want to do things through you and not just for you.” That blew me away. Being alive for our own benefit is as crazy as a cherry tree being created to eat its own fruit. It is not the nature of things. We are here for another deeper purpose. Put another way, a river isn’t there for no reason. It is meant to sustain and nurture life, in and around itself. We were made for another time and another place. We were made for Heaven. But before that, there is the business of living on earth to enjoy and conquer. In Colossians 1:10 Paul speaks of us, “…bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Living a life worthy of the Lord and pleasing Him in every way is tough if we are beaten down by insecurity and a lack of self-worth. In order to live for Him we need to be “bearing fruit in every good work” and “growing in knowledge”. This means understanding who we are and why we were made. Prayer: Father, please teach me how to live an unselfish life, worthy of your name so that I may understand your will and be fruitful for you. Amen.

'Insecurity is based on doubt. It asks deep questions like “Do I matter? Am I important? Am I loved?” It also asks shallower questions like, “Does this suit me? Can I get away with this haircut?” Whoever you are and what...
