Being Whole: 21 Days to Overcoming Relational Trauma

SHAME: Shame is central to identity and could be a source of low self-esteem and a diminished sense of the self. It is deeper than embarrassment. Being rejected early in life is the greatest predictor of shame. The lack of secure bonding because of unsafe and inconsistent caregiving fuels a sense of shame. It becomes problematic when it is internalized. When I experience shame, it’s like walking around with the biggest spotlight on your worst feature and everyone laughing at you. This is when we must know “we are not that feature”. Shame doesn’t consider your actions bad but considers “you” as bad. This is the core of why shame destroys. Overcoming shame as a Christian involves recognizing that our worth and identity are rooted in God's unconditional love and grace. We must acknowledge our imperfections and mistakes, but also believe that we are forgiven and made new through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is important to confront and challenge the lies and negative self-talk that fuel shame, and to replace them with the truth of God's Word. Seeking accountability and support from trusted spiritual mentors or counselors can also be helpful in the process of healing and transformation. Ultimately, we must surrender our shame to God and trust in His power to bring redemption and restoration to our lives. Through a deeper understanding of God's love and grace, we can break free from the chains of shame and embrace the abundant life that He has promised us. Questions to Ponder: How has shame impacted your relationships with God, self, and others? Breathe deeply and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the faulty messages formed because of shame. Discover through God’s word what is true.
