Day 2: Cleansing the Temple

Read Matthew 21:12–17

If you could step into any moment from the Bible - witness it firsthand, feel the emotions, and see it unfold before your eyes - what scene would you choose?

For me, it would be the cleansing of the temple.

Imagine it: Jesus walking into the temple, His gaze falling on the chaos. Merchants shouting, coins clinking, tables cluttered with goods - all in a place meant for prayer and communion with God. And then, His righteous anger ignites.

The Bible paints a vivid picture of Jesus flipping tables, scattering coins, and driving out those who turned the sacred into something profane. His voice thunders, declaring, “My house will be called a house of prayer!” (Matthew 21:13).

This isn’t an impulsive outburst; it is holy passion. Jesus, perfect and pure, was heartbroken and enraged by the sin that defiled the temple. He could not stand to see a space meant for God’s presence corrupted by greed and selfishness.

And yet, after the cleansing comes something beautiful.

The blind and the lame come to Him in the temple, and He heals them. In the very place that had been desecrated, Jesus restores its true purpose - bringing healing, hope, and holiness.

Now, let’s bring this powerful scene into today.

If your heart is a temple, what ‘tables’ need overturning? What distractions, sins, or misplaced priorities have cluttered your soul and kept you from true worship?

Where do you need to make space for:

  • Healing?
  • Devotion?
  • Worship?
  • Adoration?

Take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to shine a light on those areas. What needs to be dealt with firmly, even aggressively, to make room for God’s presence in your life?

We can’t play games with sin. We can’t treat God’s forgiveness as an easy pass.

Instead, let’s follow Jesus’ example. Let’s cleanse our hearts, rid ourselves of anything that separates us from Him, and rededicate ourselves to lives filled with His love, joy, and peace.

The same Jesus who overturned tables and brought healing in the temple is ready to do the same in us - if we let Him.

Father God,

Please cleanse my heart and make it a place of pure worship for You. I do not want any dark corners in my life that reflect the things of the world or even the enemy. I want my life to bring you glory and for my body to be a place where your Holy Spirit can dwell with ease.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
