Honoring God Above All

If honor means giving the proper weight or value to someone or something, then to ignore or undervalue others is the essence of dishonor. Honor is recognizing the intrinsic worth of a person or thing. The Bible exhorts us to show honor and esteem in many situations and toward certain people; however, the overwhelming use—more than 300 times—of the Hebrew word for honor (kabód) in the Old Testament refers primarily to the glory of God.

Human beings are expected to give glory and honor to God first and foremost (Joshua 7:19; Isaiah 42:12; Malachi 2:2). Scripture also mentions that God gives honor and glory to people (1 Samuel 2:29; Psalm 3:4; 8:5; 91:15). He possesses glory by nature (Psalm 113:4). He is the God of glory, and from Him flows glory—that is, the manifestation of His power, authority, and honor. The sum of His virtuous attributes gives Him incomparable weight, and that should move all of humanity to recognize Him. That’s what faith is about: recognizing who God is in all His splendor and what He represents in every area of our lives.

The central call of Scripture (Proverbs 3:9) is to give God glory and honor as the top priority in our lives. That kind of posture empowers us to live a lifestyle of honoring others as well. Honoring God is the most important dimension of honor—it means seeking to please Him in everything. And it influences all the other aspects of how we show honor in our lives.

That’s why it’s essential to find practical ways to honor God—by acknowledging Him, living according to His Word, being guided by His Holy Spirit, and sharing His message of salvation and love through acts of service to others.

To Reflect: A heart transformed by the love of God is a grateful heart—one that passionately desires to honor Him and others.
