Let’s Talk:

There’s an old hymn that says:
“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way.”

Simple words, but pretty deep if you think about them.

Because here’s the thing:
The more you trust someone, the easier it is to obey them.

That hit me again during today’s video as I chatted with my boys.
We had a conversation that led to this one thought that won’t leave my brain:

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to do the right things.
Trying to be a “good Christian.”
Trying to say the right stuff, act the right way, check the right boxes.

But sometimes, in all that striving—I’ve neglected actually knowing God.

Big Truth: Trust Grows from Relationship

The wild thing?
The more you know God, the more you realize how good, how kind, how perfectly loving He actually is.

And the more you understand that,
The easier it is to trust Him.
And when you trust Him,
Obeying Him isn’t a burden—it’s a no-brainer.

We can spend so much energy trying to “do right”
and totally miss that God’s not just after our behavior—He’s after our hearts.

He wants relationship with us.

And when we pursue Him,
When we really start to know Him…
Everything else starts to fall into place.

The Pizza Analogy (Stick With Me Here)

I’ve got a friend who makes insane pizza. Like, top-tier level.
If I’m making a pizza and he gives me advice—even if it sounds weird—I’m doing it.

No questions asked. Why?
Because I know he knows what he’s doing.

Now imagine my buddy who’s a mechanic starts giving me pizza tips.
This dude fixes engines, not crust.

So yeah… I might take his advice.
But I’m probably second-guessing everything he says and questioning him the entire time.

Why?
Because I don’t know if I can trust him when it comes to pizza.

(I've got no TRUST in his CRUST)

Same goes with God.

When we don’t know Him, His instructions can feel confusing, even frustrating.
But when we do know Him—really know Him—we’re way more likely to trust Him…
Even when what He’s saying doesn’t totally make sense yet.

So, What Now?

Stop striving.
Start knowing God.

Build the relationship.
Spend time with Him.
Talk to Him.
Get in His Word.

Because the more you know Him,
The more you trust Him.
And the more you trust Him,
The more naturally obedience flows.

Relationships take time.
You may not feel “there” yet—and that’s okay.
But as you keep showing up, God keeps drawing near.

Let trust grow.
And let that trust drive your obedience—not guilt, not pressure.

Prayer You Can Pray:

God, I want to know You more. Not just do the “right things,” but actually know Your heart. Help me build real relationship with You. Teach me to trust You more, and let that trust make it easier to obey. I don’t want to follow out of fear—I want to follow out of love and confidence in who You are. Grow my faith as I grow closer to You. Amen.

Bottom Line:

Trust grows from knowing God.
And obedience flows from trust.
Get to know Him—and everything else will start falling into place.

Though the Eyes of a Child - a Video Devotional With Dustin Tavella and His Sons

Sometimes we think we understand basic concepts in the Bible like faith, wisdom, and rejoicing. But Illusionist and America's Got Talent winner, Dustin Tavella, takes a dive into how profound these concepts can be when they are viewed through the eyes of a child. In this 7 day podcast series, Dustin sits with his 5 and 6 year old sons to talk through these very concepts. This bible plan is meant to inspire a sense of wonder when it comes to our Christian walk and breathe new life on some concepts that we may have grown a bit numb to.
