Day 6: Galatians 6
As we’ve learned through our study of the book of Galatians, Jesus sets us free from sin and death and enables us to live a free life. But our lives shouldn’t be inwardly focused—we should walk out our freedom in the context of community. In this final session, we’ll focus our attention on the responsibilities we have toward one another.
Reflect
Freedom is a major theme in the book of Galatians. As we learned last time, freedom isn’t a license to live however we please. It’s meant to be exercised for the good of others. Stated differently, we have a responsibility to one another—like looking out for one another, restoring others when they’ve done wrong, and carrying one another’s burdens. In what specific ways have you “carried out” your responsibilities to others? How have others carried out their responsibilities to you?
Following Christ almost assures us that, at some point, we will experience opposition. At the very least, the world will often disagree with us; at worst, it will be hostile to us. And that’s one reason why it’s so important for us to embrace community—because we need each other, to bear one another’s burdens and help each other persevere to the end. Who can you encourage to keep going? What can you do to help carry their burden?
Respond
It is for freedom that you have been set free. And the freedom God desires for your life is one lived in submission to His Word. To do that, we need one another, which will always be a messy process. But our hope is not for perfection in this life. The hope of the gospel is that Christ has secured us a place among the household of God and one day we will meet Him face to face. Until then, it is our responsibility to persevere in the gospel we have come to believe—that we are saved by faith alone through grace alone in Christ alone.
