Day I | Hallelujah Anyway Devotional

I was cruising through the Rocky Mountain National Park last fall with my wife. She tends to get a bit car-sick on windy roads, so she volunteered to drive, leaving it up to me to capture the event with pictures. I was so amazed by the beauty and grandness of it all that I kept impulsively snapping shots around every corner. I’d take a picture, look at my phone screen, and then back at the amazing scenery. “It just doesn’t do it justice!” I kept saying to Angela. She eventually replied, “Yeah, but it’s still worth trying.” As a songwriter, that is exactly how it can feel when trying to write a song for the Lord.

The idea of making a worship song for the Lord that might measure His worthiness and honor or His glory or depict His majesty can seem so unattainable because it truly is! Heaven is God’s throne, and the earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1). What could I possibly bring that might measure up? I understand what the Psalmist may have been feeling when he wrote, “What is man that you are mindful of him” (Psalm 8:4). We’re infinitesimal specks of dust living on a more considerable speck of dust that’s floating in His vast Galaxy. We cannot come close to creating anything grand enough to measure His worth. But because He is so glorious and worshipping Him is so amazing, it’s still worth trying! Though our words fall short of honoring His great Name, we’ll sing hallelujah anyway!

Thankfully, God is not a greedy King who sits on His throne, throwing our offerings into a trash heap because they’re not good enough for Him. Neither are our offerings acceptable because we’ve done so well with them. C.S Lewis wrote about how our worship is like the son who asked his father for sixpence to buy his father a gift. His father was pleased with it, though he was sixpence none the richer. Our Father in Heaven is blessed with any effort His children give to worship Him, and Jesus is the one who makes our praise acceptable through His perfect offering of Himself upon the cross.

So worship your heavenly Father today in the name of Jesus! Don’t let your feelings of inadequacy or your failures in life keep you from praising the God who loves you. The call to worship is not a challenge to impress God with what you can offer Him. It’s an invitation to respond to His love and grace, and His mercy, glory, and majesty, with a meager song and a whole heart. When life is difficult, disappointing, and confusing, sing hallelujah anyway and praise the Lord in everything.
