Iron Sharpens Iron

Reflect:

The imagery of iron sharpening iron is a powerful reminder that growth and improvement often come through friction and challenge. In sharing your faith, it’s easy to become comfortable with what you already know or how you typically engage with others. But God calls us to continual growth, and one way He accomplishes that is through the influence of others and, in this case, our Gospel partner, who can sharpen our skills, deepen our understanding, and refine our approach.

When you allow someone to challenge you—whether by providing constructive feedback, asking hard questions, or modeling effective ways to share the Gospel—you open yourself up to becoming more effective in ministry. This process may feel uncomfortable, but it is essential for growth. The sharpening is mutual; as you learn from others, you also have the opportunity to sharpen and encourage them in return.

Even Jesus, though perfect, demonstrated the value of partnership and teaching. He surrounded Himself with disciples, mentoring and challenging them while also allowing them to learn from each other. Similarly, Paul mentored Timothy and encouraged him to pass on what he had learned (2 Timothy 2:2). God designed us to grow together in community, not in isolation.

Respond:

Take advantage of your partnership with your Gospel partner and allow them to sharpen your skills in sharing your faith. Trust them to challenge you and help you grow.

Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you a teachable heart, a willingness to accept constructive feedback, and discernment to grow in ways that glorify God. As you grow, look for ways to sharpen them as well, ensuring that the Gospel is shared with wisdom and grace.
