Day 1: When God Speaks, Everything Changes

Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential theologians in early church history. As a young man, he lived a life of worldly pursuits and indulgence, until one day he heard a child’s voice saying “take and read”. Seeing it as a divine sign of God speaking, Augustine opened the Bible and read Romans 13:13-14. In that moment, his heart was changed and he decided to put aside his former way of life to follow Christ. When God speaks, lives are radically changed.

In today’s passage, we witness Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus, an incident that reshaped not just his life, but became the catalyst to many others encountering Christ. The man who once sought to destroy believers became one of the greatest champions of the gospel. When Jesus spoke, everything changed for Paul; from an enemy, he became a servant. This transformation was not just a change in behaviour, but a complete renewal of his heart, mind and purpose.

Just as Paul’s life was changed after encountering Christ, we should remember that those who come across as being beyond the reach of God might just be one encounter away from giving their lives to Him too. Who are we to say what God can or cannot do? Our loved ones may seem distant, but God’s voice can penetrate even the hardest of hearts. We should be steadfast in prayer and outreach, refusing to close them off prematurely.

God’s voice not only transforms individuals but also calls them into action. Both Paul and Ananias responded to God’s directives, showcasing the importance of listening to and obeying His call. As God is continually at the forefront of fulfilling His Great Commission, we must ask ourselves: are we ready to hear His voice and follow?

In a world filled with distractions, it is crucial to remain attentive to what God is saying. When God speaks, transformation happens. Through His power, we are not just improved but made entirely new. Let us develop a lifestyle of quietening our hearts, being ready to listen and quick to obey. May we be confident that nothing is impossible for God, continually reaching out to others with the hope of the Gospel, for when He speaks, everything changes.

• God’s voice can penetrate the hardest of hearts. Take time to pray for a loved one who is far from God, trusting that He is more than able to draw that person to Him
• Quieten your heart and spend time to tune in to the Holy Spirit. Is there anything God wants to direct or speak to you in today?
