Everyone knows the story of the Titanic. The unsinkable ship that fell to the hands of Mother Nature in the North Atlantic over 100 years ago. This story has always fascinated me. Mostly due to the fact that I’ve asked myself over and over again, how did this happen? The crew had voyaged over the North Atlantic before and knew there were hazards in their path. Warning signs were all around them in the form of icebergs and the best way to avoid these during the early 1900’s was to rely upon the naked eye. In the days before radar, sonar, and other technologies that might have helped a human being, they had to do the job of watching out over the ship’s path from the crows nest.
We all know the story. The watchman saw the iceberg and warned the ship's crew deck of the impending danger, but it was all too late. The ship struck an iceberg and ultimately sank, resulting in one of the worst catastrophes of that day and time. The ships' need for speed and setting records for their passage were far greater than the protection and safety of the passengers and crew. The watchman did his job, but the circumstances around him were set up for the ship’s failure.
In Ezekiel 33 we find God’s call on Ezekiel’s life much the same as the crew on Titanic-a watchman for Israel. It is Ezekiel’s job to warn Israel of their pitfalls and if they heed the warning they will be saved, if not, their blood would be on their own heads. How often do we get warnings from God or from people God has placed in our lives of impending danger? Will we heed those warnings and save ourselves, or will we choose to ignore them and suffer the consequences? The choice is ours. God has given us ample resources to live this life and follow the path of righteousness. It is our job to recognize the signs!
