Gifts of Song Christmas is a holy festival—the feast of the incarnation of the Son of God, commemorating that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). No event in history has birthed more music than the Feast of Christmas. From “Away in a Manger” to “The Messiah”—from the simplest, most child-like to the most majestically symphonic—the world’s “night” has been filled with the festival music of Christmastide. As we sing the carols of the season, it is a new opportunity to transcend the obvious. The “obvious” lies in our simply singing in observation or celebration of the season. But not so obvious is to see and respond to the fact that the Holy Spirit is present to secure a song in our souls. He is ever ready to implant within us those resources which will make us sufficient for every good work, for every season or circumstance. The songs of the season pass, but the song which the Spirit seals to you will remain—even when the festival is over.
