GOSPEL OF JOHN
AUTHOR:
The Gospel of John was written by the apostle John himself. He was the only disciple still alive, and times were changing before his eyes.
DATING:
John wrote his Gospel sometime in the AD 80's before the persecution of Domitian began. This was his first book with four more to come before his death in AD 98.
AUDIENCE:
The Gospel of John was written to various churches around Asia Minor where he had an influence. John was one of the elders in the church of Ephesus and was looked up to because of his experiences and wisdom.
REASON:
John was written to show the audience that Jesus was both fully God and fully man. It was most likely used to provide information that the other Gospels left out and to show more of a theological perspective on the life of Christ.
THEME:
Jesus came to give eternal life because he is God.
KEY VERSE:
"I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (10:10b ESV)
