Habits are strongly tied to tradition, even culture. When the Israelites left Egypt, they were still living with their “slave mentality” that they’d acquired due to years of forced hard labor.
God used the wilderness to deal with this mentality, and God warned the Israelites not to imitate the practices of the local inhabitants as they entered the Promised Land.
Can you imagine what would become of someone with a “slave mentality and habits of an evil nation”?
