About the Book of Nahum
In this book, Nahum tells the people in Nineveh that God will punish them.
Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria. #1:0 Assyria was a country that was north of Israel. It was part of the country that we now call Iraq. At that time, the people in Assyria were very rich and powerful. They were also very cruel. They were enemies of God's people in Israel and Judah. #1:0 The Israelites were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes. The land that God gave to them as their home was called Israel. After King Solomon died, the nation of Israel became two kingdoms. The kingdom in the north was called Israel. The kingdom in the south was called Judah. They attacked God's people and the people of other countries.
God had already sent the prophet Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh. Those people believed Jonah, and they decided to obey God. So God did not punish them at that time.
But then the people did wrong things again, so God was angry with them again. Nahum told them that God would punish them for all the wrong things that they had done.
After Nahum said these things, Babylon's army did come and destroy Nineveh. #1:0 Babylon was a rich and powerful city beside the Euphrates River. The king of Babylon also ruled many other countries. This happened in about 612 BC.
