Sonship Is Greater Than Slavery

There’s a big difference between knowing about God and knowing you’re His child. Paul paints a picture of two spiritual realities—one of slavery, the other of sonship. Under law, people lived as slaves—fearful, controlled, insecure. But under grace, we are adopted, wanted, welcomed.

Through the Spirit, we cry “Abba, Father.” That’s not just poetic language—it’s a new identity. Sons don’t earn inheritance; they receive it. Slaves obey out of fear. Sons obey out of love. If you’ve felt distant from God, maybe it’s because you’ve been approaching Him like a servant instead of a son.

Jesus didn’t just buy your freedom; He brought you home. You’re not a religious worker. You’re family.

1. Do I approach God more like a servant trying to impress Him, or a son who knows he’s loved?
2. How would my prayers and actions change if I lived from sonship?

Prayer:

Abba Father, thank You for adopting me. I’m not an outsider—I belong in Your family. Remind me that I don’t have to strive for what You already gave me through Jesus. Amen.
