And Then I Grew Up...

Spiritual maturity stems from obedience. This passage of scripture displays Saul’s lack of spiritual maturity. Saul was not mature; he wanted his way on his timing. Saul is a perfect example of what not to do. His mistakes in this passage show us three ways that we can develop obedience.

1. Obedience requires submission. Saul needed to submit himself to God. He received a word from God to wait for Samuel, but he rushed. He was scared of what would happen, and made his own decision. The foundation of all obedience is submission to the one you are obeying. What area of your life do you need to submit to God? Whatever it is, spend the next 5 minutes, bring it to God, and lay it at His feet.

2. Obedience requires trust. You have to trust who you are obeying. Saul did not trust that God would come through and decided to take it into his own hands. It would have required trust for Saul to sit and wait for what God was going to do. So, where are you taking your life into your own hands and not trusting God? Where do you need to trust in God’s direction?

3. Obedience requires waiting. When you have built trust in someone, you can wait for them. You have to wait to hear what to do. You have to wait to follow God’s timing. You have to wait to obey. In what area do you need to wait? Where is God calling you to pause and wait on Him to show up?

Spiritual Maturity is only possible through obedience, and obedience is only possible when you submit, trust, and wait.
