Girl, Get Your Groove On!

If you’re waiting for the how—to move from undisciplined couch potato to a well-training difference-maker—and the encouragement to believe it’s possible, today is your day.

Once again, Paul likens the Christian life to the intense preparation of an athlete. He’s not trying to shame us into shape—he’s inviting us to run like someone who actually has a shot at winning. But he knows what it takes to get there: discipline.

The kind of discipline Paul describes to the Corinthians is the daily kind—where self-control spills into how we live. Experts call it the spillover effect—when discipline in one area spills into others. A small win—like praying in the morning, walking 10 minutes, or reading one verse—can lead to better choices throughout your day. That’s what Admiral William McRaven famously said in his viral speech: start by making your bed. This simple, small act of discipline gives you a win at the beginning of your day. It builds momentum. Over time, it spills over—into how you approach your schedule, your health, your priorities…even your purpose.

The same applies to our walk with Jesus. You don’t need a total life overhaul to begin. Just one small, consistent choice. Maybe it’s reading your Bible before checking your phone. Or saying no to something that drains you spiritually. Then make another consistent choice. These small acts add up.

I know you may feel like you’re behind or not cut out for this race business. But Paul’s words and the Admiral McRaven’s example remind us that you don’t have to be perfect to start experiencing the life you desire. You don’t even have to be fit or a Jesus freak. You just need to begin:

  • Recognizing yourself as a runner, called by God.
  • Asking: Does this help me run? If not—let it go.
  • Stopping the comparisons and running YOUR race.
  • Running as if you can be the winner.
  • Taking small steps to become more disciplined.

So, girl, get your groove on. And maybe… make your bed.

Prayer

Lord, show me the small steps I can take today to grow in discipline. Help me choose what fuels my faith and let go of what slows me down so that I can run to win. Amen.
