Day 7: Staying Connected to the Source

During a demanding season of ministry, I learned a hard lesson. I poured myself into growing the church, serving others, and making things happen, but I lost my connection to Jesus as the vine. The result was burnout, frustration, and fruit that seemed impressive but faded quickly.

Pastor Andy Stanley faced a similar challenge at North Point Community Church during a time of rapid growth. Despite the outward success, he felt distant from God, as his ministry became more about managing programs than nurturing his relationship with Jesus. He made a bold choice: he simplified his schedule and carved out daily time to abide with Jesus. This wasn’t just reading devotionals—it was intentional, ongoing communion. He began talking with Jesus throughout the day, making decisions from a place of connection rather than just strategy. The outcome wasn’t less fruit but more authentic, sustainable fruit that reflected Christ’s character.

Here’s what I wish I’d understood sooner: Abiding isn’t another task to check off in ministry. It’s the foundation that gives every other effort meaning. Abiding isn’t about piling on more spiritual activities; it’s about living in constant connection with Jesus through the ordinary moments of life. The goal of ministry isn’t the fruit itself; it’s the natural overflow of staying rooted in Jesus.

A branch doesn’t strain to produce fruit; it simply stays attached to the vine, and the fruit comes naturally. What if your ministry could feel that spiritually organic?

Your Turn: Try conversational prayer today. Have short, ongoing conversations with Jesus throughout your day—about decisions, interactions, or moments as they happen. Set three random phone alarms to pause and connect with Him. At the end of the day, journal how this shaped your ministry mindset and interactions.

A Personal Note:
Friend, if you’ve walked through this seven-day journey, know this: Your heart for ministry matters deeply. Your pursuit of renewal shows your commitment to serving God well, and that’s powerful.

Renewal isn’t a one-time destination; it’s a daily choice to return to the Source of strength, joy, and purpose. Your greatest impact in ministry flows not from your effort but from your connection to the One who called you.

Choose one practice from this week that resonated most and commit to it for the next 30 days. Share this journey with a trusted friend or mentor for accountability and encouragement.

You’re not alone. God sees your heart, values your service, and is ready to renew your strength. Keep returning to Him—He’s always there to meet you where you are.
