Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘People must not live only on bread, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “Get away from me, Satan! It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

Jesus answered, “It is also written, ‘Don’t test the Lord your God.’ ”

Then the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert, and there the devil tempted him. Jesus didn’t eat for 40 days and 40 nights, and he got very hungry.

“Come and follow me,” Jesus told them, “and I’ll send you out to fish for people.” Right away they left their nets and followed him.

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Turn away from your sins, because the kingdom of heaven is near.”
