OUR GOD IS TRUTH
This such a strong warning and a strong encouragement from John.
Before I tell you what jumped out at me, why don’t you write out, even in scribbles or dot points, what came to mind when you read this. God speaks to each one. Be confident that you, through the filter of the Holy Spirit, hear from Him.
In the times of the early church there were many false teachings swirling about, similarly today, a lot is said and written to undermine the truth of the Word of God. Deception about the Divinity of Christ and the power and reality do the death and resurrection of Christ. You could probably jot down a few of these untruths yourself. This spirit of error or deception is called out for what it is. The spirit if anti-Christ.
John concentrates on the truth that Jesus and the Father are one. That Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah.
The truth of the Word is paramount here. John says if the truth abides in you which you heard from the beginning, “Then you also will abide in the Son and in the Father” NASB version.
Firstly, to me this speaks of the responsibility we have for allowing the truth that we heard in the beginning to stay in our heart. The word abide that is used in the NASB version is a good picture of remaining faithful, of staying and also of dwelling.
There is a direct link between the truth in our hearts and our relationship with the Father and the Son.
Secondly, although John gives a strong warning about deception, he encourages us when he writes that the anointing we have is stronger! And don’t we need to hear that today!
TPT.. “But the wonderful anointing you have received from God is so much greater than their deception and now lives in you”
In our digitally altered and sometimes fake news world, we can absolutely trust our firm foundation which is the word of God.
Finally, both the NLT and NASB version make a strong statement about the togetherness of the Father and the Son. While The Passion Translation simply speaks of the fact the one who embraces Christ embraces the Father, the other versions stress the need to acknowledge the Son and to confess the Son. To me this is a stronger doctrinal statement of the way of salvation and of real truth. It also remind me of my responsibility to speak the truth.
Reflection:
I know that, if let to my own devices, I can allow myself to lose sight of Biblical truth is this season. Are there any truths that you may have let go of?
What else spoke to you through these verses? How have you been challenged to maybe do things differently?
Prayer:
Thank you Father that as he hold fast to the truth that we heard in the beginning we can abide with the Father and the Son. Thank you that we can have confidence when we will see you face to face at the end of the age. Please help us, as children of God to have the courage to live righteously before You and others
