Second John was written with pastoral love and concern for the fledgling church. Would they neglect to embody God’s love for one another? Would they fall prey to false teachers? John’s message is clear: walk in the truth, obey God’s commandments, love one another and guard the teachings of Christ. John also confirmed the spiritual safety of the believing community with a beginning and ending reference to their election by God. (2 John 1:13) 

It’s easy for us to get off track sometimes. John encourages us to stay the course by responding to one another with love, exhorting us to partner this love with the truth of the gospel. Second John heartens believers for steadfastness in Christ and hope to “receive a full reward” (2 John 8).
