Identity

DAY 8 OF 28

Main Idea: Counted as Righteous - Part 1

Have you ever felt like no matter what you do, something just doesn’t feel right? Maybe you get good grades, play sports, or have tons of friends, but inside, there’s this emptiness you can’t shake. Or maybe you’ve done something you regret and wish you could undo it.

That feeling? That’s what the Bible calls being broken. And the truth is, we’re all broken in some way. We all make mistakes, hurt people, and fall short of the life God made us for.

This week, we’re going to look at what being broken really means and how Jesus can fix it. To help us understand, let’s start with three stories.

Imagine you were driving down the road and decided to go 100 miles an hour. A few weeks go by, and the police arrive at your door and inform you that you were driving through a school zone ... and they caught you on camera ...and you were on your phone ... and eating something you bought from Taco Bell ... all at the same time. You recall this illegal, if not rather impressive feat, and recognise that you may have broken at least one or two laws. And of course, you receive a fine, something which you would struggle to pay but could find a way to. That would be frustrating.

Keeping with this analogy but going even further, imagine that you had intentionally broken the law in a much worse way, some sort of terrible, violent crime, and the penalty to be paid for this crime was death. That would be much worse. The truth is, without Jesus, we’re all guilty before God. We are sinners. We have broken God’s law. And not in a small way. The result of sin is death, being separated from God forever. More on that in a moment, but now the second analogy.

Reflection Questions:

  • When you think about breaking God’s law, what examples from your own life come to mind?
  • How does recognising your sin affect the way you see your need for Jesus?
  • Why do you think the Bible describes sin as something serious enough to separate us from God?
  • How does that change the way you view your choices or actions?
