Identity

DAY 1 OF 28

Main Idea: Who Am I? (Made in God’s Image)

Our world is extremely good at putting labels on people. We’re also extremely good at putting them on ourselves. For instance, maybe you’ve been scrolling on social media, and seen someone who does nothing but show off their Rolex watches, luxury sports cars, or first class flights. They’re not just showing off stuff, they’re trying to tell you who they are. “I’m the rich guy,” “I’m the funny guy,” “I’m the musical girl,” or “I’m the morally upright person.”

Sometimes we care so much about these labels that we think they completely define who we are. Some people make massive life choices over the fact that they have adopted such a label.

Everyone’s looking for an identity, something that tells them who they are and why they matter. We look for it in what we wear, what we post, who we’re with, or what we’re good at. But none of those things last. The Bible says we find our true identity in the One who made us and came to rescue us: Jesus.

The problem is not that labels aren’t useful: people often can be grouped by their interests, personalities and hobbies. But the problem is that none of these things answer the fundamental question: “Who am I?” These labels can’t tell us who we are as humans or as individuals.

That’s what we are going to look at in this series—we’re going to see who we are. To do so we need to consider more than just what we do, but who we are deep down, beyond any activity or hobby we have. We’ll answer it in a way that is true for all people, regardless of their labels. We’ll also see why—no matter what label we take on or how well we fit it—people still struggle to know who they really are, and feel like they aren’t complete.

In order to find out what something is, there is no better person to ask than the person who made it. The creator always knows more about the object than the object itself. So, our starting point is to look at how God defines us and what His word says.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does Genesis 1:26–27 tell us about who made us and how we were made?
  • According to these verses, what makes humans unique from the rest of creation?
  • What label or identity are you most tempted to allow to define you right now?
