Back to the Basics 365

DAY 296 OF 365

As we grow our relationships, we are to be courteous. We are instructed to be polite, respectful, and considerate of others. However, being courteous requires humility. Pride causes us to look past people because we see ourselves above them, on another plateau. Pride puts ourselves before others. But pride is a sin. Instead, we are called to be compassionate and courteous.

When you are humble, you courteously want to place others before yourself. Philippians 2:3 says, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” We are to be, as instructed in 1 Peter 3:8, “...all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:”. We are not to act in pride of our own achievements or sense of self-worth, but instead, we are to esteem others as better than ourselves, acting in humility and compassion towards others. D.L. Moody once said, “Be humble or you’ll stumble.”
