It is commonly stated that everything rises and falls on leadership. Truthfully, the responsibility to correct anyone who is under authority falls on the shoulders of those in authority. However, this also means that as a disciple is a reflection of their master, they will also face the criticisms their master faces.
In Matthew 10:24-25, Jesus said, “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?” When a disciple has critics, the criticism then falls more on the master rather than the disciple. Those who would attack a disciple for following and speaking about Christ are not just attacking the disciple; they are attacking the master. Jesus himself was ridiculed and persecuted for His holiness, so He teaches us to expect adversity for following Him.
We are also reminded in Matthew 5:10, “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Be confident and stay faithful to Jesus as His disciples, because as the world may be against us, it was always against Him first.
