Wake Up Out Of The Spiritual Stupor

To have a good run through boot camp, we must be fully awake spiritually. We are told to be on watch, to be alert, to guard, for we don’t know when our hour or the hour of Christ will return. Even if He does not return in our lifetime, we have an hour of death where we will meet Him.

“Do this, knowing that this is a critical time. It is already the hour for you to awaken from your sleep [of spiritual complacency]; for our salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed [in Christ].” Romans 13:11 AMP

We truly live in a critical time; a time when evil and corruption dominate the news, a time when numerous world events and disasters are unfolding. Although no one knows the time of His return, signs indicate it is not far off.

“Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some, there is no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” I Corinthians 15:34 ESV

We are reminded with warnings in scripture to be ready. Don’t be like the five foolish virgins who failed to fill their lamps with oil. The ten went out to meet the bridegroom who was afar off, and the wise five took oil with their lamps. Of course, we know the foolish ones tried to borrow from the wise, who told them there wouldn’t be enough to go and purchase their own. The moral is, they all had plenty of time to prepare, but half of them were lax. Perhaps they procrastinated, thinking, "We have plenty of time."

The parable ends with the groom (Jesus) shutting the door before the five foolish virgins returned with oil. Don’t wait. I want to see an open door!

There is a mentality in society that the Bible is just history, something that happened moons ago. That mentality also gives rise to the idea that if it is real, there is plenty of time. Jesus’ words that end His parable say it all.

“So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.” Matthew 25:13 NLT

Prayer: Lord, stir us into action; awaken our spirits, open our spiritual eyes and ears to truth. Awaken us from our lethargic ways so that we will be ready. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
