Diapers, Pacifiers, and Other Holy Things

DAY 2 OF 6

You Have a Moment

The day our first daughter was born, "quiet" left my life. Six months later, I slumped on my bed amidst a pile of unfolded laundry and cried, "God, where are you? I miss You! It seems like ages since we’ve had a really good talk."

Before children, I loved my hour-long quiet times with God. But caring for a new baby, learning to be a good wife, and balancing a job consumed my time and energy. I yearned for those carefree moments with God.

I forced that longing to go sit in “time out.” My life was different now. It was time to accept it.

"I love You, Lord," I prayed into the laundry. "I want to spend time with You. But the days of hour-long quiet times with You are gone."

God agreed. He whispered to my heart, "Lorraine, you don’t have an hour. But you have a moment."

A moment? "Yes, God. I have a moment. Good talk. Now I’ve got a diaper to change and a toilet to scrub."

As I positioned the diaper under Amanda’s tiny bottom, the Lord nudged, "You have a moment."

"Yes, Lord, I do. I sure spend a lot of time changing Amanda. Just like You’ve spent a lot of time changing me."

I smiled at the analogy and moved to the toilet with my scrub brush.

"You have a moment."

"Yes, God, I do. Thanks for washing away my sins, just like I’m washing away disgusting things in this toilet."

In the kitchen, as I set the table for dinner, the whisper came again. "You have a moment."

"Yes, God. Thank You for food to nourish our bodies."

I began to see it. As I placed the bread basket on the table, I thanked Jesus for being the Bread of Life. I set Amanda in her highchair and praised God for sitting on His throne. As water poured over the dishes, I rejoiced that the blood of Christ was poured out for me.

The next day, I wrote Scriptures on note cards and taped them around the house—by the changing table, the kitchen sink. I opened my Bible and placed it by the rocker to read while nursing. As I worked, I listened to Christian radio.

Slowly, I was learning to take captive every thought the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5, NASB). I was drawing near to God (Hebrews 10:22, NIV). Seeing Him in every circumstance became easier, more natural. Then a strange thing happened. I began to sing!

In the middle of mundane duties, God allowed me to glimpse His glory. As I wiped spit-up off the floor or cleaned strained peas off the wall, I rejoiced. I was in the presence of the living God.

Before having kids, I had compartmentalized God into time slots labeled Bible Study, Quiet Time, and Church. Now the compartment walls had collapsed. God spilled over into every moment of my life.

Ironic, isn’t it? It took not having an hour with God to realize that I had the whole day with Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean to abide in Christ? (Read John 15.) How is abiding different than a quiet time?
  2. What lofty things do you think about that tend to raise themselves up against the knowledge of God? How do you take your thoughts captive to Christ?
