Rise and Follow: 30 Days in Mark

DAY 16 OF 30

In today’s reading, Jesus turns cultural expectations upside down. As he predicts his death again, the disciples argue about who is greatest. Their idea of leadership mirrors the world’s: climbing higher, gaining status, proving superiority. But Jesus quietly sits them down and teaches, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (9:35).

Then he welcomes a child into their midst. In the ancient world, children had no social standing. Yet Jesus declares that receiving a child in his name is like receiving him—and even receiving the Father. Later, when others try to push children away, Jesus insists that the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Mark weaves together these moments to show us what greatness in God’s kingdom really looks like. It’s not about power or prestige. It’s about humility, service, and child-like trust.

As you reflect, consider: Where are you tempted to chase recognition or control? How might Jesus be inviting you to embrace the lowly, to welcome the overlooked, to learn from the faith of children? The way of the cross is not about climbing up, but stooping down. This is the surprising path of true greatness in God’s kingdom.
