DAY 3 OF 30

When He Knocks

GOD’S WORD

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door,
I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
Revelation 3:20 KJV

Sometimes the breakthrough we long for begins with a knock we have trained ourselves to ignore. The noise and hurry of life can dull our ears to the gentle voice waiting at the threshold. Jesus does not force the door. He does not break in or pry it open. He knocks. He calls. He waits. His promise is not about performance, but about presence. He speaks of table fellowship, of shared bread and conversation. That image reminds me how easy it is to miss Him by filling my days with busyness that seems important but leaves me unsatisfied.

We see this same invitation throughout Scripture. When Abraham welcomed three mysterious visitors under the oak trees of Mamre, he hurried to prepare a meal, and in that sacred fellowship God confirmed His promise of a son (Genesis 18:1–10). Additionally, when the risen Jesus walked with two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus, they did not recognize Him until He broke bread at their table; in that simple act, their eyes were opened to His presence (Luke 24:30–31). And when He dined with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus reminded everyone listening that He came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:1–10, Mark 2:15–17). Again and again, meals become the doorway to revelation, belonging, and grace. Revelation 3:20 is the continuation of that same story—Jesus still longs to enter, to sit with us, and to restore us through His presence.

Opening to Him does not always mean dramatic gestures. It may look like pausing mid-task to whisper His name, choosing silence over noise, or setting a simple table with a candle, Bible, and journal as a sign of welcome. The meal He offers is not transactional; it is transformational. At His table, we remember that we are wanted, not merely useful. We are known, not merely measured. For me, even lighting a candle before I pray has become a small but sacred way of turning the latch, reminding my soul that I am welcoming the Guest who promises to stay.

You may whisper, “But I need a door to open for my next job, or for healing, or for provision.” His answer is always Himself first. Not because those other doors are unimportant, but because when His presence fills the room, wisdom finds its seat again, fear loosens its grip, and the next doors we walk through are handled with humility and courage. Dining with Him restores our appetite for what truly sustains. Presence prepares us for promotion.

If your heart’s door feels swollen shut with disappointment, ask Him to help you unfasten it. Forgiveness can loosen rusty hinges. Gratitude can free a frame warped by grief. And sometimes the simplest prayer, “Come in, Lord Jesus,” becomes the key that turns. He does not arrive with condemnation. He comes with light, with truth, and with kindness that does not run out. I have opened that door with tears, only to find Him patient and gentle, never rushing me away.

Soul Check

  • What habit keeps you from noticing His knock?
  • How can you prepare a table, both literally and spiritually, for His presence today?
  • Where have you seen Him turn a meal or a moment into revelation, as He did with Abraham or the disciples at Emmaus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I hear Your knock. I open the door and welcome You. Come in and sit with me. Share bread with me, speak peace into my noise, and heal what has grown tired or numb. Replace my striving with trust, my distraction with Your presence. As I dine with You, let my desires be reordered, my fears be stilled, and my pace reset. And when the time comes to walk through new doors, may I go with ears tuned to Your voice and heart steady in Your presence. Amen.
