30-Day Open Door Prayer Challenge

DAY 5 OF 30

Ask, Seek, Knock

GOD’S WORD

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”Matthew 7:7 KJV

I think the Lord has a unique sense of humor. Jesus takes our complicated calculus and reduces it to three simple verbs: ask, seek, knock. Asking reminds us that we are not our own source of knowledge. Seeking turns our face toward the One who knows the way. Knocking accepts that some doors only open when faith becomes audible and embodied. This is not a vending-machine formula; it is an invitation into a relationship. I once wrote a specific request on an index card and prayed it daily. God didn’t just answer, He reshaped my heart as I waited.

I am reminded of Hannah, who poured out her longing for a child with such intensity that Eli thought she was in a state of intoxication. Her tears were her asking, and in time God placed Samuel in her arms, a child who would one day lead a nation (1 Samuel 1:10–20). Solomon, standing before the Lord as a new king, sought wisdom rather than wealth or victory. That seeking became the foundation of a reign marked by discernment and peace (1 Kings 3:5–12). And then there’s the persistent widow who refused to stop knocking at the judge’s door. Her determination paints a picture of prayer that doesn’t let go until justice comes (Luke 18:1–8). Each story gives flesh to what Jesus invites us into, asking that is specific, seeking that is wholehearted, and knocking that is patient and bold.

Many of us ask vaguely, seek sporadically, and knock timidly. But what if you asked and clearly said, “Lord, I need wisdom for this decision by Friday”? What if you sought diligently, opening Scripture before email, inviting counsel before overthinking? What if you knocked where God has already stirred desire, even if you’re afraid of rejection? Faith matures not in theory but in practice, and I’ve learned that clarity often comes after the knock, not before it.

And when the waiting feels long, cynicism can slip in. Jesus points us back to the heart of the Father: if imperfect parents know how to give good gifts, how much more will the Father in heaven give to His children? Asking, then, is not pestering a reluctant God. It is leaning on a generous Father. Seeking is not frantic scavenging. It is walking beside a faithful Guide. Knocking is not breaking down a door. It is showing up where grace has already extended an invitation. That reminder has quieted my impatience more times than I can count.

Soul Check

  • What one specific ask will you bring to the Father today?
  • Where is God nudging you to knock again?

Prayer

Father, teach me to ask with trust, to seek with patience, and to knock with courage. Save me from vague prayers and fearful inaction. Align my desires with Your will and my timing with Your wisdom. Where I grow weary, remind me of Your generosity. Open the right doors, and give me peace about the ones You close. In Jesus’ name, amen.
