What neighbor?

When Jesus spoke about loving our neighbor, the first question people asked was, “But who is my neighbor?” The answer is simple: your neighbor is anyone in your life. And when He said anyone, He meant everyone—even the people you don’t like or respect.

That includes corrupt politicians, robbers, thieves, criminals, the co-worker who mistreats everyone, and, of course, the kind and good-hearted people as well. It doesn’t matter to God—He calls us to treat all people with the same love and respect.

I find that really hard to follow. Loving the good ones is easy, but the difficult ones? That’s tough. But Jesus didn’t pick and choose. He loved and prayed for all people, even when He was on the cross. He asked God to forgive those crucifying Him because “they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). That’s the example He gave us.

And He made it clear: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44-45).
