Mary Magdalene's Journey: 'Not Left Out!' (Part 3)

DAY 5 OF 5

Identity through relationships

The African philosophy of 'Ubuntu' is of great significance around the world…and, in fact, for humankind. After all, the term 'Ubuntu' means as much as 'I am, because we are.' In other words, you and I form our identity in interacting and communing with others. This is also why it can leave such deep scars when you find yourself outside the community, marginalized and left to your own devices for your identity. If you have no one to mirror yourself in, who are you anymore?

Mary Magdalene must have been permeated with those feelings: first of all, the feeling of being outside the community, but then also the feeling of belonging and seeing again who she is through interactions with others...With others who love her, who see her, who encourage her. Jesus did that most of all.

No wonder she addresses Him with that special title of 'Rabboni.' That title is significant, not only by its literal meaning, but also because it reflects how Mary Magdalene sees herself in relation to Jesus. By calling Him 'Rabboni' (meaning 'Master'), Mary Magdalene places herself in Jesus' community of close disciples. This is how she relates to him! This is how she identifies herself! No longer as someone on the margins, but as someone close by the heart of Jesus--in the front row to learn his lessons.

What you say and think about Jesus says a lot about your own self. In Mary Magdalene's case, it is even all-important. By what name or title would you call Jesus? How do you relate to Him? How will you let Him shape your identity?

P.S. Are you enjoying this journey with Mary Magdalene? Your own character might even resemble hers. Care to find out? Take The Chosen 'Test of Character' and journey for a while with the character you have the most in common with.

About this Plan

Mary Magdalene's Journey: 'Not Left Out!' (Part 3)

Jesus’ compassion for the marginalized shows us that true belonging isn’t earned—it’s given. Mary Magdalene’s story is a powerful example of this. Through both Scripture and stories from 'The Chosen,' explore how Mary Magdalene moved from brokenness to belonging, and how her story challenges us to see ourselves through the eyes of grace. You can read this plan separately, but it is also part of 'The Chosen's Test of Character' journey.
