Jesus Is Our "Light of the World"

DAY 5 OF 7

Jesus is My Friend

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin and the one chosen by God to announce Jesus’ arrival. In John 1:29–30, John sees Jesus and proclaims, “Look, the Lamb of God. … This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me’” (NIV). He pointed everyone to Jesus, saying, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30, NIV). John’s friendship with Jesus wasn’t about his own status—it was about exalting Christ.

In this video, John the Baptist befriends John before the youngster meets Jesus. Young John is struggling with how a mistake he made is hurting his family. John the Baptist reminds his new friend that “nothing is so broken God can't fix it.”

John needed a friend, and in the movie, he finds one first in the Baptizer and then in Jesus. Throughout the Gospels, we read of the impact Jesus had on his 12 closest friends—the disciples—including John.

When we accept Jesus’ invitation to be our forever friend, our lives become transformed like theirs were. Jesus wants to be our friend … and His friendship changes everything.

Reflection Questions

  • What steps can you take to deepen your friendship with Jesus?
  • When have you turned to Jesus when you needed a true friend?
  • Which of your friends can you introduce Jesus to this week?

About this Plan

Jesus Is Our "Light of the World"

This seven-day family Bible study is inspired by the animated feature film from Salvation Poem Project, a ministry that crafts stories to share Jesus Christ with the world. LIGHT OF THE WORLD tells the story of Jesus in a whole new light: through the eyes of John, His youngest disciple. This study will show how Jesus—the Light Of The World—changed the world forever and continues to change lives today through His love and light in a dark world. From parents to kids of all ages, this devotional is designed for the whole family to experience together.
