Jesus Is Our "Light of the World"

DAY 1 OF 7

Jesus is the Light Of The World

Have you ever gone out on a starless, cloud-filled night? That’s really, really dark, right? Long ago, people lived in darkness like that. But the prophet Isaiah announced a great light was coming. For generations, parents told their kids who grew up and told their kids who grew up and told their kids that the Messiah was coming.

But over time, some people began to lose hope. In this video, young John wants to believe what his mother, Salome, says about the Messiah.

As John grew older, he discovered the Messiah is Jesus of Nazareth, who entered a dark world to shine God’s love and truth for everyone to see—and He still does that today! No matter how deep the darkness appears, Jesus’ light can overcome it.

John and his mother Salome, are real people from the Bible. John and his brother James became two of Jesus’ disciples, and we read in Matthew 27:55–56 that Salome became one of the women who followed Jesus.

John saw clearly that Jesus truly was the Light of the World: “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5, NIV). John saw for himself: Jesus’ light is stronger than any darkness.

Like John and Salome, we are called to reflect that light in our lives. No matter how dark our world seems, we have hope that the light of Jesus will break through.

Reflection Questions

  • Will we follow Jesus, the Light of the World?
  • Will we let Jesus’ light shine in and through us?
  • How do we best reflect the light of Jesus in a dark world?
  • Who in your life needs to see Jesus’ light through you?

About this Plan

Jesus Is Our "Light of the World"

This seven-day family Bible study is inspired by the animated feature film from Salvation Poem Project, a ministry that crafts stories to share Jesus Christ with the world. LIGHT OF THE WORLD tells the story of Jesus in a whole new light: through the eyes of John, His youngest disciple. This study will show how Jesus—the Light Of The World—changed the world forever and continues to change lives today through His love and light in a dark world. From parents to kids of all ages, this devotional is designed for the whole family to experience together.
