1 Corinthians

DAY 12 OF 30

In Corinth, the opinion was apparently circulating that abstinence was the more spiritual path. It is possible that some church members were influenced by ascetic ideas that viewed the body and sexuality as evil. Paul responds to this with a balanced answer: Yes, celibacy can be good—but not for everyone. For God has created us as whole people, with body, spirit, and soul. Sexuality is not an "unspiritual" evil but a part of creation that finds its good and protected framework within marriage.

Verses 3–4 emphasize mutual responsibility in marriage. This is not about making demands, but about mutual self-giving. However, these verses have also led to much cruelty in marriages when they have been misunderstood or misapplied. Paul’s intention was different: he wanted to provide a protective and pastoral framework for marriage by showing spouses that they are responsible for one another—in love, not under coercion. He addresses both partners as equals.

At the same time, Paul makes it clear: whoever has the gift of celibacy may see it as an opportunity to concentrate fully on service to the Lord. But it is and remains a gift—not a duty and not a spiritual standard.

For Further Thought

A misguided piety can quickly lead to temptation—whether in relation to sexuality or in other areas of life. How can I ensure that my faith does not become a source of coercion or misunderstanding, but instead leads me to a genuine and free devotion to God?

About this Plan

1 Corinthians

Corinth was a major port city in ancient Greece—a center of commerce, religious diversity, and known for loose living. Precisely there, a young church was growing, learning to live out their faith in a secular environment. Many issues they faced remain relevant today. In this reading plan, you'll see how Paul addresses the early believers’ challenges and shows what it means to live as a church, strengthen one another, and use the Spirit’s gifts. It’s about genuine love, handling conflict, the power of the resurrection, and how faith in Christ can transform everyday life.
