Finding Jesus in the Storm: A Devotional for Those Living With Psychosis and SchizophreniaНамуна

Jesus in the Storm
Storms come in many forms. Some are loud, disorienting, and at times unbearable. They arrive as sudden waves of confusion, voices that others can’t hear, a world that feels strange, dissonant, and frightening. Other storms are slower, deeper, and more intimate. They manifest as subtle changes in the speed at which time moves or the disheartening ways our thoughts connect and disconnect. They bring the unsettling sense that even our connection with God is slipping away. We know God is there, but holding on can feel impossibly hard. However, the story of Jesus in the storm shows that storms are not foreign to God. The disciples cried out, “Don’t you care if we drown?” It’s a cry many of us know well. Jesus did not turn away; he did not abandon them. He will not abandon you. Jesus stands in the middle of the storm and speaks peace, not the peace of escape, but the peace of presence. He does not promise that storms will vanish, but he does promise never to leave the boat. His presence resists the loneliness and fear that storms bring. Even when we cannot see clearly, even when faith feels like little more than clinging on, Jesus is already in the storm, already with us when we feel furthest from safety. Faith is not always the ability to see clearly. Sometimes faith is the fragile trust that, even in confusion, you are not abandoned.
If Jesus is already in the boat—even if silent, even if asleep—what might you want to say to him today?

About this Plan

This seven-day devotional, written by Sanctuary Ambassador John Swinton, is intended to support those of us living through psychosis, schizophrenia, and other altered states of mind. It offers gentle reflections and prayers rooted in Scripture and the lived experience of people who seek Jesus in places of deep confusion and fragmentation. These reflections are intended as invitations towards faith, hope, and the possibility of healing, even when cure seems distant.
