The Coach Approach: A Better Way to Live, Lead, and Leave a Legacy

DAY 2 OF 4

LEGENDARY LISTENER

In a world filled with noise and constant distractions, truly listening can be quite challenging. Do you see yourself as a good listener, or do you often find yourself waiting for your turn to speak? Are you fully present when you listen? When it comes to helping others, the most crucial thing we can do is listen deeply.

“The beginning of love for others is learning to listen to them. Many people are simply looking for someone who will listen.” —Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Jesus exemplified the art of listening. With 307 questions asked, it’s clear He wanted to hear what others had to say. He took the time to pause, slow down, and truly listen. Jesus was never in a rush; in fact, many were frustrated by His lack of haste. Like Jesus, we need to take a seat, create space, allow for margin, and attentively listen to others' thoughts, ideas, and insights.

There are three essential elements to becoming a legendary listener like Jesus. It's easy to remember because when we listen, we ADD value. ADD serves as a simple acronym for Awareness, Distractions, and Deeper Meaning.

  1. Awareness: To be a legendary listener, we must first align our minds and hearts to focus entirely on the person speaking. Acknowledge when we stop listening and make a conscious effort to refocus on the conversation. The Bible describes awareness as a profound spiritual understanding and recognizing God's involvement in everything...even conversations. Listening requires discernment, wisdom, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23 encourages us to “Buy—and do not sell—truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding.” Awareness is the foundation of becoming a legendary listener.
  2. Distractions: Before engaging in a deep listening interaction, eliminate any potential distractions. If distractions arise during the conversation, adapt accordingly to maintain your focus. Scripture recounts how Martha was distracted by many things. In Luke 10:41, Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things.” It's impossible to listen and be distracted at the same time. Remove distractions to become a legendary listener.
  3. Deeper Meaning: To enhance our listening, we need to engage both our heads and hearts. Listen not only to the spoken words but also to what remains unsaid. Pay attention to nonverbal cues that may convey additional messages. Seek wisdom from the Lord to fully grasp the meaning behind the message you are hearing. Remember, James 1:5 states, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Legendary listeners dig deeper to grasp the real message behind the words.

Become a legendary listener today. Ask the Lord for spiritual awareness, help in eliminating distractions, and wisdom to discern the deeper meaning.

Pause

  • On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being a legendary listener, how would you rate yourself?
  • How do you think your spouse or best friend would rate your listening skills on the same scale?

Practice

  • Take one action today to minimize distractions while you're listening.
  • This week, pay special attention to nonverbal cues as you listen.

Prayer

Lord, You are the Ultimate Listener. Teach me to listen in a way that shows others I care, value, and wish the best for them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
