EquipHer Vol. 13: "Owning Your Power With Professional Grace"Намуна

Day 3 – Balancing Humility and Confidence
"Being humble doesn't mean diminishing your voice; it means knowing how to use it to express the truth God has placed in your heart."
In a professional context, especially in environments where female presence is the minority, finding the right balance between humility and assertiveness can be a significant challenge. Humility doesn't mean diminishing or hiding your voice, but rather using it wisely to communicate the truth God has impressed upon your heart. Being assertive means confidently stating your opinions and values while maintaining respect for others.
Scripture guides us in this balance. Philippians 2:3 tells us: "Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." This verse invites us not to act out of selfish ambition but to value others while still recognizing the value of the truth we carry within us.
To balance humility and assertiveness in your work environment, consider the following practical tips:
- Active Listening: Before expressing your opinions, take time to listen carefully to others’ perspectives. This shows respect and helps you better understand the dynamics at play.
- Clear Communication: When sharing your ideas, do so clearly and concisely, avoiding aggressive tones. State your beliefs firmly but always with kindness.
- Emotional Management: Stay calm even in conflict situations. A thoughtful and composed response reflects both humility and self-confidence.
- Seeking Feedback: Ask colleagues for input and be open to constructive criticism. This attitude shows humility and a desire to grow professionally.
Reflective Questions
- In what situations have you felt the need to raise your voice to defend your values?
- What strategies can you adopt to balance humility and assertiveness in your workplace?
Prayer
Lord, guide me in finding the balance between humility and assertiveness. Help me use my voice to express the truth You've placed in my heart, without fear or arrogance. Grant me the wisdom to affirm my values with kindness and firmness, so I can be a witness of Your love in every workplace situation. Amen.
