Jesus Calms a Storm

Storms hit everyone. No one is exempt. It is a part of our human experience. Sudden setbacks in health, relationship breakdowns, and career detours are just a few of the storms that can hit us. In the midst of these storms, it's hard to pray, to see good coming out of it and to find peace. Yet storms have a way of deepening our dependency on God.

Look at the disciples - the squall hits their little boat and almost overturns them when the disciples wake Jesus up and ask Him a question that sounds surprisingly like one we might ask when stuck in a storm. When you are overwhelmed, afraid and entirely out of your depth, you must have wondered what they asked aloud, “Don’t you care if we drown?”.

Jesus responds only in action by waking up, rebuking the winds and the waves with three words - "Quiet, Be Still".The howling winds and churning waves subsided immediately. The beauty of this moment was in how nature responded to its Maker. The book of Job highlights to us how supremely powerful and sovereign our God is over all of nature. Nothing is beyond His realm of control, and He exercises authority over everything created.

Isn’t it surprising that nature bends to the will of God, but we, who have the gift of free will, do not?

We have seen God come through in a million ways in the past, and yet when the newest storm hits, we get completely overwhelmed. That’s when Jesus probably whispers to us, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”.

How dependent are you on your Saviour? Unlike Jesus then, who was asleep on the boat, the risen and ascended Jesus doesn’t sleep nor slumber (Psalm 121); instead, He watches over us constantly by night and day. He is mindful of every storm you are going through and will go through in the future. You don’t need to be afraid if you stay confident that He is with you and will bring you safely to shore.
