Seven Letters: The Churches in Revelation

DAY 2 OF 7

# Day 2: The Church in Smyrna Smyrna is a place that still exists today. It’s now known as Ismir and is in Turkey. Smyrna was the center of learning and culture and known as “the glory of Asia,” but they were also very hostile toward Christians. This letter is written to the persecuted church in Smyrna, and the whole theme is about how suffering leads to glory—death to life. You’ll also notice that this letter does NOT include a get right. The church here was doing really well at following Jesus. GOOD WORK: Persecution Exodus 4:31 says, “And they believed. And when they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.” Jesus says the same thing here. He sees their suffering, BUT even in their tribulation and poverty, they are rich.  What we think of ourselves is not as important as what Jesus thinks of us.  And as Christians, He sees us as rich! We have everything we need and are eternally rich. So, even though they are suffering, Jesus thinks very highly of them. Question for Reflection: What are some of the ways Jesus thinks of you? GET READY: Don’t fear Jesus lets them know it won’t be easy. They will suffer, they will be tested, and they will go through tribulation. But they don’t need to be afraid! He has a purpose in their suffering. James 1:12 reminds us, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” We get to be over comers—no hell, no lake of fire, no eternal death. Just glory! Our suffering on earth, which will happen, leads to eternal glory! Question for Reflection: What scares you the most about being on fire for Jesus?
