Exodus: A Group Study

DAN 48 OD 77

What is this passage saying?

David rested in Yahweh’s power and presence no matter the enemy that came up against him. He encourages the listener to take courage because Yahweh will never forsake His people.

What is this passage teaching?

No matter what comes against God’s people, they can trust His power and presence in their lives. David’s chosen weapons of warfare were dwelling on Yahweh’s beauty, hiding in His presence, and bringing joyful sacrifices among his enemies (Psalm 27:4-6). Even when darkness surrounded him, David believed he would “look upon Yahweh’s goodness in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13). All he needed to do was wait on Yahweh, trusting His loyal love and faithfulness.

How do I respond?

Waiting is one of the most undesirable activities of the modern age. In a time that focuses on instant gratification, waiting has become harder and harder to embrace. Whether it's waiting on a food order, for wisdom to make a big decision, or for God to intervene in a hard situation, waiting can produce anxiety and fear. However, like David, the weapons of waiting are rooted in beholding God’s beauty, trusting God’s faithfulness, and dwelling in God’s presence. Although they had seen the power of God, again and again, Israel’s grumbling and complaining were indicative of a failure to trust His provision in their present circumstance. Are you in a season of waiting? Take some time today to behold God in the splendor of his beauty (Psalm 96:6), remembering His loyal love for you. Pray that God would increase your trust in His promises, knowing that He will be faithfully loyal to complete the work He started in you (Philippians 1:6). Finally, dwell in His presence, pleading that He would fill your life with the Spirit.
