Exodus: A Group Study

DAN 51 OD 77

What is this passage saying?

Yahweh delivered the Ten Commandments to Moses, emphasizing these as the foundation of the law.

What is this passage teaching?

Although there would be over six hundred laws given to Israel, the ten commandments serve as a foundational set of instructions for Israel. However, even the ten commandments can be summarized in two sections. The first, incorporating the first four commandments, is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37; Deuteronomy 6:5). These commandments encourage covenantal fidelity to Yahweh by worshipping Him alone, a prohibition on graven images, respecting Yahweh’s name, and observing the Sabbath. The second section, incorporating the last six commandments, is to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39; Leviticus 19:18). These commandments govern behavior between people like honoring parents, murder, adultery, and theft. The command to love God and love people is the underlying motivation of the law. Yahweh is not demanding blind legalism, but loving obedience rooted in faith.

How do I respond?

Although the new covenant does not demand obedience to the law, Jesus makes it clear that loving God with all your life and loving people as yourself are the basis for Christian conduct (Matthew 22:34-40). External obedience that is not rooted in loving God or loving your neighbor is destructive disobedience. Like Israel, Christ-followers are called to obedience rooted in faith. This obedience is neither performative nor self-gratifying, rather it is marked by self-sacrifice and flows out of a heart that loves God and loves people. What does it mean to cultivate a love for God and the people in your life today? Write down specific ways you can live those commands out. If you struggle with self-righteous performance or legalism, confess to God, asking Him to stir up love for Him and others in your heart.
