How To Impact Your World For Jesus

Picture the scene. The sun is beating down on a dusty hillside overlooking the sparkling Sea of Galilee. A motley crew has gathered. They’re here to hear Jesus deliver His now-famous “Sermon on the Mount.” Have a look around. Perhaps surprisingly, this is no gathering of the elite. Instead, these eclectic listeners are the ordinary, the overlooked, and the marginalized; a kaleidoscope of weathered faces etched with hardship, trial, and poverty.

Suddenly, a breathtaking one-liner drops. Jesus looks at this unassuming assembly and astonishingly declares them to be the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) and the “light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). With these two startling metaphors, Christ reframes this crowd of nobodies as being catalysts for global transformation.

The images Jesus uses here are steeped in significance; carefully designed to resonate with His audience.

Salt, as well as being a mineral that preserved and enhanced food, was also a symbol in the Hebrew Bible of God’s long-lasting covenant with Israel. Consequently, when Jesus labels His followers as “salt,” He’s saying: “You are the living vessels of my long-lasting promises to renew the world; the preservers of true life.”

Light, too, was a familiar metaphor, used to communicate the promise of God’s glory and presence filling the earth. Consequently, when Jesus labels His followers as “light,” He’s saying: “You are the chosen carriers of my presence; the displayers of my everlasting Kingdom.”

Today, Jesus invites you to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs Him; to infuse your spheres of influence with His love, grace, and truth. Empowered by His Spirit, you can rise above the ordinary here and now, and step into the flavorful, light-filled life God has designed for you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, it’s so easy to fall into routines of apathy, allowing life’s mundane rhythms to drown out the Spirit-filled potential You’ve placed within me. Today, revive my soul! Give me the courage to be salt and light in my world. Empower me to carry Your Kingdom into every area of my life.
